From Beth: Today was so fun! Sarah Beth got her first bottle. The nurse gave it to her because they worry about her aspirating during the feeding and the nurses know more of what to watch for. So, she ate almost 30ccs of milk (a little more than she should be getting because we expected her to spit some up). She loved the milk. She also coordinated her suck/swallow/breathe much better than the nurse expected her to. She only had to stop once during the feeding to burp her. She finished the whole bottle in less than 15 minutes. It was great! Now she'll be able to get a bottle per day. They'll leave the rest of her feedings on the feeding tube. After a few days of that, they will put her on two bottle feedings a day. She'll do that for a few days and then switch to all bottle feedings. It will take a while to get there, but we are learning to be much more patient.
Tonight I was also able to give her a bath for the first time. Sarah Beth has experienced lots of baths, but this is the first time I've ever been able to give it to her. It was a little difficult because I had to give her the bath while she was in the isolette and use only the portholes to reach her. That was quite interesting. She did really well with the whole thing. I think she tolerated my learning curve well. Her little hair looks much lighter and sticks up a lot after her bath. Very cute. :)
She's now off her prednisone and is almost
off her theophylline. She is still taking her diuretics and will
continue on those for quite a while. The doctor said she did not plan to
raise her feedings anymore for a little while because she thinks Sarah Beth is
getting enough to continue gaining weight and not so much that she would gain
fluids. She is also getting vitamins two times a day. She is
growing really well. She'll weigh enough to come home by next week most
likely. But, of course, she won't be able to come home for quite a while
Thank you all again for your continued prayers. We still need them!
